Villarreal storm fortress Vicente Calderón

Through a Vietto goal, the Yellows claimed a 0-1 victory over an Atlético who had not lost at home in the Liga BBVA since May 2013.

Villarreal CF achieved what no other team had managed to do this season: winning at the Vicente Calderón Stadium. Through a solitary goal from Luciano Vietto, the Yellows overcame Atlético de Madrid on matchday 15 of the Liga BBVA and ended the Rojiblanco’s unbeaten run at a stadium where Diego Simeone’s side had not known defeat in the Liga BBVA since May 2013.

Atlético controlled possession from the kick-off, creating great chances in the opposition area, but they were unable to finish them. Guilherme Siqueira and Koke Resurrección had the first attempts for the Rojiblancos with two shots that went wide, while Tiago Mendes was stopped by a great save from Sergio Asenjo. For the visitors, Denis Cheryshev was the liveliest and most dangerous player in the first 45 minutes.

Simeone’s men continued to fight to open the scoring after the break, but Villarreal gradually gained ground as the minutes went by and Miguel Ángel Moyà had to keep his team in the game with several worthy saves to keep out attempts from Cheryshev and Vietto. It was precisely Vietto who tipped the scales in his team’s favour in the final stages, making it 0-1 after a great individual move in which he shook off Diego Godín and beat the Rojiblancos keeper with an accurate strike.
