Getafe come out on top from Deportivo clash

Two first half goals sealed a victory against the visitors who managed to narrow the deficit in the 79' but will need to continue fighting in order to get out of the relegation zone.

Getafe’s 2-1 win over RC Deportivo at home, in the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, earned the south Madrid team three valuable points on matchday 29 of the Liga BBVA. Despite their best efforts in the second half, the Galicians were unable to turn the result around.

Although the opening stages of the encounter gave the impression that it would be an evenly fought game in which anything could happen, two lapses in the La Coruña defence allowed Getafe to go in front. Alexis Ruano popped up first by making the most of a dead ball in the box following a corner kick, and then Pablo Sarabia set up Sergio Escudero to double the home side’s lead. The first half ended 2-0 and put the onus on Deportivo to come out all guns blazing after the break.

Víctor Fernández’s men went all out to rectify matters after half time. Oriol Riera and Lucas Pérez had the two clearest goalscoring opportunities, but neither was able to beat Vicente Guaita between the sticks. With a lead to hold onto, the Getafe backline defended deeply, but Toché was still able to narrow the gap and ensure for a thrilling finish to the game in the 79'. However, that goal was not enough to rescue a point for the away outfit. The game ended with a victory for Getafe over a Deportivo side that will have to wait until their next outing to put any more points on the board.
