Deportivo pick up a vital point

Toché's goal after 78 minutes saw the Galicians draw 2-2 with Real Sociedad and stay above the drop zone.

Víctor Sánchez del Amo's debut as RC Deportivo coach brought a 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad on matchday 31 of the Liga BBVA, a result that sees the Galician side remain outside of the relegation places. Meanwhile, the Basques stay in eleventh.

It was an evenly-matched first half at Anoeta, with both sides coming out with intensity and playing at a high tempo. Sergio Canales’ powerful shot, saved by Fabricio Agosto, and a right-footed effort over the bar from Ivan Cavaleiro were the chief initial opportunities of the encounter. The match changed on 33 minutes when Xabi Prieto put the hosts 1-0 up from the spot, but there was time for Deportivo to level up the clash before the break. Lucas Pérez saw his penalty saved by Gerónimo Rulli, but was quickest to the rebound to make it 1-1.

The second half could not have got off to a better start for Real Sociedad, who regained the advantage with one of the season’s most spectacular strikes. A measured long pass from Canales found Chory Castro, who connected with the cross to send a terrific volley into the back of the net. However, just as David Moyes’ men were beginning to sense a return to winning ways, Toché latched on to the ball inside the area to seal a 2-2 final scoreline and hand his team a priceless point.
