Cristian Herrera rescues a point against Espanyol

The Alicante side cancelled out Sergio García’s first half screamer.

RCD Espanyol and Elche CF drew 1-1 to wrap up the matchday 30 action in the Liga BBVA. The teams played out a game with very few threats on goal in which Elche managed to equalise in the dying minutes.  This result means Fran Escribá’s team sits 16th in the table with 28 points, while Sergio González’s side remains in 12th with 35 points.

Edu Albácar came close to scoring the goal of the weekend in the first minute when his volley from outside the box grazed off the crossbar. However, it was the Catalans who broke the deadlock, with Espanyol capitalising on their first real attempt on goal to go in front. Sergio García, who was commanding in the centre of the park, blasted a left-footed strike from outside the area which came crashing off the inside of right post and into the back of Przemysław Tytoń’s net. The setback put a halt to the away side who had been playing well in the game up until that point.

The second half got off to an even start. Lucas Vázquez created the first chance after the restart with a long-range strike that Tytoń had to put out for a corner. Sergio González’s players defended deep and looked to hit their Alicante opponents on the counter, while Elche pushed further up the pitch as the minutes ticked by. The persistence paid off in the 76th minute when Cristian Herrera made the most of a Kiko Casilla parry to grab an equaliser with his head. Sergio García could have got the winner near the end but Tytón was at hand to ensure the match finished all square.
