Leganes win historic first promotion to Liga BBVA

The club from the Madrid suburbs will play in the Liga BBVA for the first time after beating mid-table Mirandes 1-0 away.

A day CD Leganes will never forget! On the 42nd and final matchday of the regular Liga Adelante season, they held their nerves to triumph 1-0 away to CD Mirandes, with defender Pablo Insua heading in from a corner just after the restart. His goal proved enough to to seal promotion, sparking euphoric celebrations among the fans who had made the 300 kilometre trip to the Anduva Stadium in Miranda de Ebro, northern Spain.

Coach Asier Garitano has guided the outfit from the Madrid suburbs to a spot in the top flight for the first time in their history, at the end of a campaign in which his side have delivered consistently excellent performances and hard work aplenty. Garitano has engineered a meteoric rise since taking the helm, having first overseen the club's climb out of Segunda Division B (the third tier) and now led his charges into the Liga BBVA.

Jon Ander Serantes between the sticks, Martin Mantovani in the heart of defence and Gabriel in the middle of the park have provided a strong spine for a team in which individuals have taken a back-seat to the unit, albeit Ruben Peña and Alexander Szymanowski have regularly been inspirational in attack. The coach has kept his squad fresh thanks to his rotation policy, while fashioning a side that is very solid defensively and prolific going forward. These two overarching qualities have stood them in good stead, ultimately earning them a place in next season's Liga BBVA.
