Diego Godin named Best Defender in LaLiga Santander 2015/16

The Atletico Madrid stalwart picked up the award for the Best Defender in LaLiga for the first time in his career.

Diego Godin (Rosario, Uruguay, 16 February 1986) once again displayed his finest defensive attributes on a regular basis for Atletico last term, recovering possession on a whopping 125 occasions. The Uruguayan centre-back's performances have now been rewarded with the Best Defender in LaLiga Santander 2015/16 award at the #PremiosLaLiga Gala.

Godin touched down in the Spanish capital ahead of the 2010/11 season, after three impressive years at Villarreal CF. The 30-year-old's importance has been growing year on year and he is now considered a true club icon thanks to his battling qualities, commitment, defensive solidity and aerial prowess.

In 2015/16, Godin once again proved to be a key man in Diego Simeone's side, as shown by the fact that he racked up 2,650 minutes of playing time for Los Rojiblancos throughout the campaign in LaLiga, all of which came as a starter. He also chipped in with one goal to boot.
