Atlético and Barcelona fail to draw blood

The Liga BBVA's top two teams produced a goalless draw in the Vicente Calderón, keeping alive the fight for the top spot.

The Estadio Vicente Calderón hosted a clash between the Liga BBVA's top two teams, Club Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona. It was a passionate match that ended in a goalless draw, a result the keeps the two clubs atop the table.

Great things were expected from both teams in a first half in which Atlético, faithful to its own style of football, tried to close down Barcelona's space and put pressure on the azulgranas as they sought to move forward. Diego Costa could have put the home team in front, while Thibaut Courtois had to dig deep to stop a long-range effort from Gerard Piqué.

After the break, the home side put its faith in the magic of Arda Turan, while Gerardo Martino brought on Lionel Messi and Neymar for Barcelona in an attempt to take the three points from the rojiblancos. Despite the best efforts of both sides, a deflected shot from Costa and a chance for Messi that forced a good stop from Courtois, neither the rojiblancos nor the blaugranas were able to break the deadlock before the final whistle.
