LaLiga dominates Europe

Eight of the last nine Super Cup finals have been won by LaLiga teams: Real Madrid (3), FC Barcelona (3) and Atletico Madrid (2).

LaLiga dominates Europe. It’s undeniable. Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Manchester United in Skopje on Tuesday night handed the club its fourth Super Cup and a second consecutive triumph. Further proof of the dominance of Spanish teams in European competition.

Eight of the last nine Super Cup finals (including Tuesday’s clash) have been won by LaLiga teams. In that time, Real Madrid (2014, 2016 and 2017) and FC Barcelona (2009, 2011 and 2015) have won three titles apiece while Atletico Madrid have two to their name (2010 and 2012). Only Bayern Munich have broken LaLiga’s hegemony, beating Chelsea in the 2013 final.

Looking beyond the Super Cup, LaLiga teams have won 11 of the last 12 European titles in play, Manchester United’s Europa League triumph last season being the only exception.
